Oma's Gluhwein

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red wine (or 25 fl oz)
  • 0.5 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • 8 cloves
  • 2 pods black cardamom (optional)
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 orange, sliced (optional)
  • 3 cinnamon sticks

Steps

  1. Combine all ingredients in a large saucepan and gently heat over low, stirring until sugar dissolves. Avoid simmering or boiling.
  2. Reduce heat to very low, cover, and let the mixture steep for at least 1 hour without simmering or boiling.
  3. Strain out spices and fruit slices. Serve warm in mugs or heatproof glasses.
